ABB Terra AC Wallbox 80A - Basic User Guide

High-power Level 2 EV charger delivering up to 19.2 kW, built for commercial fleets and workplaces.

The ABB Terra AC Wallbox 80A is a high-power Level 2 EV charger delivering up to 19.2 kW on a single-phase 240V circuit. Engineered for commercial fleets, workplaces, and multifamily residences, it combines intelligent connectivity, robust safety features, and broad compatibility with all SAE J1772 vehicles in North America. This guide walks you through how to start and stop a charging session using this charger.

MAIN FEATURES0524_new_abb copy

Level 2 AC Charger
Current: Max 19.2 kW (80A)
Output: SAE J1772 Type 1
Operating temperature: -30 ~ 55°C / -22 ~ 131°F

START CHARGING

Option 1. Plug and Charge

  1. Insert the charging plug into the EV

  2. Charging session starts

Option 2. Using a RFID card (Optional- Depends on the charger/location settings)

  1. Insert the charging plug into the EV
  2. Swipe card
  3. Wait for authorization
  4. Charging session starts

Some EV chargers have a built-in RFID reader. If yours do, drivers can use RFID cards to transact. RFID cards are linked to the company or driver's account, enabling everything from automatic charger unlocking to credit card billing (if it's the case)

STOP CHARGING

  1. Unplug any time (disconnect the charging plug from the vehicle to stop the charging session)
  2. Session ended (please return the charging plug to the holster)
 LOCKED CONNECTOR

In some cases, the EV locks the connector. To unlock the connector, obey the instructions for the EV. It may be necessary to unlock all doors of the EV, or use the ‘unlock charge connector button’ on the car key, if present.

 STOP

Charging will stop without user interaction:

• In case of alarm/hazard.
• When the battery is full, the charge session stops automatically.
• When the maximum charge time set by the operator/owner has been reached.

CHARGER OVERVIEW

The ABB Terra AC Wallbox 80A is part of ABB E-mobility's portfolio of smart charging solutions built for the evolving needs of commercial fleets, workplaces, multifamily residences, and public locations across Canada and North America. Operating on a single-phase 240V circuit with a recommended 100A breaker, it delivers up to 19.2 kW of output power at 80A continuous current, up to three times faster than standard 16A or 32A baseline chargers. The standard SAE J1772 Type 1 cable (7.6 m / 25 ft) ensures broad compatibility with all light-duty electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the North American market.

Built with futureproof flexibility in mind, the Terra AC Wallbox supports multiple configurations to fit your installation. Output current is adjustable from 5A to 80A in 1A increments, so you can align charging power with the capacity of your existing electrical distribution system. Whether you are managing a small workplace fleet or a large multi-unit deployment, this charger is engineered to scale with your operation.

SMART CONNECTIVITY AND ENERGY MONITORING

The Terra AC Wallbox offers smart functionality through multiple connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and optional 4G, so the charger can integrate with your network whether or not cabling reaches each parking position. It supports the open communication protocol OCPP 1.6J, enabling connection to network management software for remote monitoring, access control, and session logs. For complex multi-charger sites, this supports billing capabilities, RFID authentication, and web-portal management from a single platform.

Built-in revenue-grade energy metering (Class B, ±1% accuracy) tracks energy usage per charging session, giving businesses accurate data for billing and reporting. Connected to an energy management system, the charger's data helps operators optimize charging schedules and monitor energy consumption to reduce electricity costs, and smart grid integration capabilities position the equipment well as utilities expand demand response programs.

ADVANCED SAFETY AND BUILD QUALITY

The Terra AC Wallbox is encased in a rugged, weatherized NEMA Type 4 (IP65) enclosure with IK10 impact resistance, handling harsh indoor or outdoor conditions year-round, well suited to the Canadian climate given the -30°C to +55°C operating range. Built-in protection covers overcurrent, under-voltage and over-voltage, ground fault protection (CCID20), and surge conditions, and the unit is safety certified for the North American market. These advanced safety features protect the charger, the electrical installation, and the connected vehicle across every charging session.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CHARGER AND FINANCING THE TRANSITION

Power capacity for residential chargers typically maxes out at 40A to 50A, so the 80A capacity of this unit sets it apart for commercial fleets and workplaces where faster turnaround matters. For reference, international versions of the ABB Terra AC support three-phase charging at up to 22 kW (32 A), while the North American 80A model delivers its full output on a single-phase connection. A complete charging installation involves more than the wallbox itself: EV charging infrastructure includes charging stations, the power supply system behind them, and the network management software that supports operation and maintenance. Larger fleet sites often combine Level 2 units like this one with Level 1 outlets and DC fast chargers to accommodate diverse vehicle needs.

On the financing side, leasing electric vehicles offers commercial fleet operators a cost-effective way to transition without large upfront capital expenditures. Leasing can bundle vehicle financing, maintenance, and operational support into predictable monthly payments, and government incentives, where available, further reduce the total cost of ownership for leased fleets. 7Gen supports fleet operators across Canada with exactly this combination of vehicles, charging equipment like the Terra AC Wallbox, and infrastructure planning.
